How to Save Money on Airport Transportation – Inexpensive Options
by Linda Martin
When we travel, we often don’t want to ask a friend to give us a ride at 5 am to the airport for an early morning flight. What’s the best way to get back and forth from the airport and save a bit of money too? Most airport have economy, short-term and long-term parking options. There are also many areas that have airport parking nearby at local rental car dealers, hotels and auto shops.
Does short-term parking make sense? This is the most expensive option at the airport but may work well for you if you are away for a few days. Generally it is easy to get to terminal from there and has little hassle.
Long-term parking generally is used for those taking a vacation and there is a bit more inconvenience since you may need to take a shuttle to reach the airport terminal check-in point. The shuttle service is free and included with your parking fee.
The economy parking lot is usually the furthest from the airport buildings and will save you more money than short-term or long-term parking. It may be out in the open and not covered. You should also find out the security coverage at the lot. You also will be provided with a shuttle bus to reach the terminal.
Many people forget where they park so remember to write down the aisle number and parking spot number so you can find it. There is nothing worse than returning from vacation and spending an hour walking up and down a parking lot with lots of luggage lost. You may be tired and not having the energy to do this, so forethought is a good idea.
Parking off-site is another option for travellers and some places entice you with a car wash, free cup of coffee and newspaper. Hotels and rental places often offer this service and shuttle you to your terminal.
If you are parking in town, keep in mind that they may charge differently for having your car open to weather or sheltered. Depending on the age of your car, you may be fine with it being out in the open, especially if the weather is good. Always check how long the wait is to get their shuttle to and from the airport.
An additional airport transportation parking option is to use a shared ride van that many airports have. In Fort Lauderdale, for example, you can pay 15.00 and be picked up from your home and taken to the airport. There are usually 3 or 4 other parties in the car. Depending on the line up you may have to wait a bit or be in van for a while. Still, you can’t beat the price.
Parking may be costly depending on the option you pick so compare them and make the best choice for yourself and family. Figure out if you want to pay a bit more for extra services or if you are trying to economize.
